Statement of Proposed Policy:

I believe that the purchase of some e-readers for the Dondero School’s Boynton Library will be very exciting for our students. Because this concept is relatively new to Mrs. Kaiser and me, we would like to start the program out slowly.

I would go through how to use the e-readers during their regular library classes. We would begin with grades 3-5. I would purchase a variety of books to cover different reading levels as well as genres.

Due care must be taken when using the devices. They are very expensive and should not be dropped or otherwise abused. If said action should takes place, the student will lose the privilege of using the e-reader.

The e-readers that we purchase would be kept in the school library. A student would be able to borrow one of the e-readers during the reading time of their library classes. Students could also come to the library on special “E-reader Passes” that would be extended to students to be able to come to the library during the day. Times that would work include indoor recess, before school from 8:45 until class begins, or after school until 3:15.

We would have a place where the students could sit and read regardless of classes going on, once the student felt comfortable to read on his/her own. The student should be mature enough to come into the library, retrieve the e-reader from its spot, sit down and read until the time specified on the pass is up. We would keep a log of who is expected in the library to use the devices. The student would sign in and out.

The e-reader would be returned to its place. Any problems or issues with the e-reader should be written down for Mrs. Kaiser and me to review.
